How to Make a Mermaid Out of a Watermelon

Creating a mermaid out of a watermelon is an easy and fun way to add some whimsy to your next summer gathering. With just a few simple steps, you can turn an ordinary watermelon into a beautiful mermaid centerpiece.

Step 1: Preparing the Watermelon

The first step in creating your mermaid is to prepare the watermelon. Start by cutting off the top and bottom of the watermelon so that it has flat surfaces. Then, cut the watermelon in half lengthwise. Scoop out the flesh of one half of the watermelon, leaving about an inch of flesh on the rind. This will be used for the tail of your mermaid.

Step 2: Carving the Tail

Once you have prepared the watermelon, it’s time to carve the tail. Using a sharp knife, carefully carve out a curved shape from the remaining flesh on the rind. You can make it as detailed or as simple as you like. Once you are happy with your design, use a spoon to scoop out any remaining flesh from inside the tail.

Step 3: Adding Details

Now that you have carved out your tail, it’s time to add some details. Use food-safe markers or edible paint to draw scales onto the tail. You can also use small pieces of fruit or vegetables to create eyes and other features for your mermaid. Finally, use toothpicks or skewers to attach shells or other decorations to complete your mermaid.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

Once you have finished adding all of your details, it’s time for the finishing touches. Place both halves of the watermelon back together and secure them with toothpicks or skewers. You can also use ribbon or twine to tie them together if desired. Finally, place your mermaid in a bowl filled with ice and enjoy!
