How Many Bones Does the Average Human Have?
The average human body contains 206 bones. This number can vary slightly, however, as some people are born with an extra rib or cervical vertebrae. The 206 bones in the human body can be divided into two categories: axial and appendicular.
Axial Bones
Axial bones make up the central axis of the body and include the skull, vertebral column, ribs, and sternum. There are 80 axial bones in total.
Appendicular Bones
Appendicular bones make up the limbs and girdles that attach them to the axial skeleton. There are 126 appendicular bones in total.
