How Many Bones Are in a Grizzly Bear?
Grizzly bears are large, powerful animals that can weigh up to 800 pounds. Despite their size, they have the same number of bones as any other mammal – 206.
Bones of the Skeleton
The 206 bones of a grizzly bear are divided into two main categories: axial and appendicular. The axial skeleton consists of 80 bones, including the skull, vertebrae, ribs, and sternum. The appendicular skeleton is made up of 126 bones and includes the shoulder girdle, arms, legs, and pelvis.
Additional Bones
In addition to these 206 bones, grizzly bears also have several small bones in their ears called ossicles. These tiny bones help transmit sound from the outer ear to the inner ear. Grizzly bears also have four extra molars on each side of their jaw which help them grind tough plant material.
