How to Sharpen Hammer Blades on a Flail Mower

A flail mower is a type of lawn mower that uses rotating blades to cut grass and other vegetation. The blades, known as hammer blades, are made of metal and can become dull over time. To keep your flail mower in top condition, it’s important to sharpen the hammer blades regularly.

Step 1: Remove the Hammer Blades

Before you can sharpen the hammer blades, you need to remove them from the mower. Start by disconnecting the power source and removing any safety guards or covers. Then, use a wrench to loosen the bolts that hold the hammer blades in place. Once they’re loose, you can carefully remove them from the mower.

Step 2: Sharpen the Blades

Once you have removed the hammer blades, you can begin sharpening them. Start by using a file or grinder to remove any nicks or burrs from the edges of the blade. Then, use a sharpening stone to hone the edge of each blade until it is sharp and even. Finally, use a wire brush to clean off any debris or rust from the surface of each blade.

Step 3: Reinstall the Blades

Once you have finished sharpening all of the hammer blades, it’s time to reinstall them onto the mower. Start by lining up each blade with its corresponding bolt hole on the mower deck. Then, use a wrench to tighten each bolt securely. Finally, reconnect any safety guards or covers and turn on the power source.
