The Smallest Migratory Bird
Migratory birds are birds that travel long distances between their breeding and wintering grounds. There are many species of migratory birds, ranging in size from the tiny hummingbird to the large whooping crane. But which is the smallest migratory bird?
The Rufous Hummingbird
The rufous hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) is the smallest migratory bird in North America. It measures only 3-4 inches in length and weighs less than a nickel. This tiny bird breeds in western North America and winters in Mexico and Central America.
The rufous hummingbird has an impressive migration pattern, flying up to 2,000 miles each way between its breeding and wintering grounds. During its journey, it can reach speeds of up to 30 mph!
