The Music of Out of Africa

Out of Africa is a 1985 American epic romantic drama film directed and produced by Sydney Pollack, and starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. The film was based on the autobiographical book Out of Africa written by Isak Dinesen, which was published in 1937.

John Barry’s Score

The music for Out of Africa was composed by John Barry, who won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for his work on the film. Barry had previously worked with director Sydney Pollack on the films The Interpreter (2005) and The Firm (1993). He also wrote the score for the James Bond films From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), and The Spy Who Loved Me (1977).

Kenny Rogers’ Song

The song “Love Will Turn You Around” was performed by Kenny Rogers and written by Lionel Richie. It was released as a single from the soundtrack album to Out of Africa in 1985. The song reached number one on both the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and the Adult Contemporary chart in the United States.
