Where is Foreigner the Band From?
Foreigner is an English-American rock band formed in New York City in 1976. The band was founded by Mick Jones, a British musician who had previously been a member of the bands Spooky Tooth and Mott the Hoople. The original lineup also included Ian McDonald, Lou Gramm, Dennis Elliott, and Al Greenwood.
The Band’s Origins
Foreigner was formed when Mick Jones met with Atlantic Records executive Jerry Greenberg to discuss forming a new band. Greenberg suggested that Jones team up with American vocalist Lou Gramm, who had recently left his previous band Black Sheep. With the addition of keyboardist Al Greenwood, drummer Dennis Elliott, and multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald, Foreigner was born.
The Band’s Success
Foreigner quickly became one of the most successful rock bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Their debut album, Foreigner (1977), spawned several hit singles including “Feels Like the First Time” and “Cold as Ice”. The band went on to release several more albums throughout their career, all of which were certified platinum or higher in the US. They have sold over 80 million records worldwide and are still active today.
