What Age is Your Balls Supposed to Drop?

The age at which a male’s testicles (or “balls”) drop is known as the Tanner Stage. This stage of development is named after British pediatrician James Tanner, who developed a scale to measure physical changes in boys and girls during puberty.

When Does it Happen?

The average age for a boy’s testicles to drop is between 10 and 14 years old. However, this can vary greatly from one individual to another. Some boys may experience their testicles dropping as early as 8 years old, while others may not experience it until they are 16 or older.

What Causes It?

The dropping of the testicles is caused by an increase in testosterone production during puberty. Testosterone is a hormone that helps regulate the development of male characteristics such as facial hair, muscle mass, and deepening of the voice. As testosterone levels increase, the testicles descend into the scrotum.
