How to Change a Colostomy Bag at Home

Changing a colostomy bag can be an intimidating task, especially if you are doing it for the first time. However, with the right preparation and knowledge, changing your colostomy bag at home can be done safely and easily.

Step 1: Gather Supplies

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary supplies on hand. You will need a new colostomy bag, adhesive remover wipes, skin barrier wipes, skin barrier paste or powder, scissors, and tape. Make sure that all of these items are within easy reach before you start.

Step 2: Prepare Your Skin

Clean the area around your stoma with warm water and mild soap. Pat dry with a clean towel. Then use the adhesive remover wipes to remove any residue from the old bag. Finally, apply skin barrier wipes or paste to protect your skin from irritation.

Step 3: Remove Old Bag

Carefully peel off the old bag from your skin. If it is stuck on tightly, use scissors to cut it away from your skin. Be careful not to cut yourself in the process.

Step 4: Attach New Bag

Once the old bag is removed, attach the new one in its place. Make sure that it is securely attached and that there are no gaps between the bag and your skin. Use tape to secure it if necessary.

Step 5: Clean Up

Once you have finished attaching the new bag, dispose of the old one properly. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to avoid spreading germs.
