How to Make a Swag for an Arch

Creating a swag for an arch is a great way to add a decorative touch to any doorway or window. A swag is a type of drapery that hangs in an arc shape, and it can be used to frame the entrance to your home or office. Making a swag for an arch is relatively easy and requires only basic sewing skills.

Step 1: Measure the Arch

The first step in making a swag for an arch is to measure the arch itself. Measure the width of the arch at its widest point, as well as the height from the top of the arch to the bottom. Write down these measurements so you can use them when selecting fabric and calculating yardage.

Step 2: Select Fabric

Once you have measured the arch, you can select fabric for your swag. Choose a lightweight fabric such as cotton or linen, as heavier fabrics may be too bulky for this project. You will need enough fabric to cover both sides of the arch, plus extra for pleats and hems. Calculate how much fabric you need by multiplying the width of the arch by two, then adding twice the height of the arch.

Step 3: Cut and Sew

Cut two pieces of fabric according to your measurements, then sew them together along one long side with right sides facing each other. Turn the fabric right side out and press it flat with an iron. Hem all four edges of the fabric, then fold it in half lengthwise and press again. Finally, make pleats along one long edge of the fabric and pin them in place.

Step 4: Hang Your Swag

Once your swag is complete, you can hang it on your arch. Use curtain rods or hooks to attach it securely in place. Adjust the pleats until they are even and symmetrical, then enjoy your beautiful new swag!
